Four families. The Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva — create, preserve, transform). The avatars (Krishna, Rama, Hanuman — Vishnu's two most-loved earthly descents plus the perfect devotee). The four Mahadevis (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Durga, Parvati — abundance, wisdom, warrior, devoted partner). The sons (Ganesh, Kartikeya — remover of obstacles + spiritual warrior).
Each guide is source-honest. The Rig Veda hymn, the Purana that tells the story, the lineage-keepers who carried the practice across millennia, the modern shadow (political weaponization, commercial flattening, appropriation).

Brahma ब्रह्मा
Trimurti · the creator
The first of the Trimurti — the four-faced creator who utters the Vedas, the original consciousness whose day is a kalpa (4.32 billion years) and whose night dissolves the cosmos back into seed.
Vishnu विष्णु
Trimurti · the preserver
The Preserver. The Trimurti's sustaining function — the consciousness that holds the cosmos together between Brahma's creation and Shiva's dissolution. Descends in 10 avatars (dashavatara) whenever dharma collapses.
Shiva शिव
Trimurti · the transformer
The Transformer. The Trimurti's dissolving function — the consciousness that destroys what is finished so the new can begin. Ascetic on Mount Kailash, householder with Parvati, cosmic dancer whose 108 dance steps maintain reality.
Ganesh गणेश
Son of Shiva · obstacle-remover
The Remover of Obstacles. Elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati. Lord of beginnings — invoked before every undertaking, every journey, every text. The most universally beloved deva in the Hindu pantheon.
Hanuman हनुमान्
Avatar-devotee · the perfect bhakta
The Perfect Devotee. Vanara (monkey-like being) of immense strength who served Rama. The archetype of bhakti — surrender so complete that the devotee's power becomes limitless because there is no ego left to leak it.
Krishna कृष्ण
Avatar · the divine lover
The 8th avatar of Vishnu. The cowherd-lover of Vrindavan, the charioteer-philosopher of Kurukshetra, the divine player whose lila (play) is the cosmos itself. Bhagavad Gita is his teaching. Source of more bhakti literature than any other deva.
Rama राम
Avatar · the dharmic king
The 7th avatar of Vishnu. The dharmic king whose entire life is the working-out of how to remain righteous when righteousness costs everything. Husband of Sita, devotee-king of Ayodhya, the model of vrata (vow-keeping) in the Hindu world.
Lakshmi लक्ष्मी
Mahadevi · abundance
The goddess of abundance — material, spiritual, relational, aesthetic. Consort of Vishnu, lotus-born from the churning of the cosmic ocean. The most-invoked devi in modern Hindu daily practice — every Diwali night, every new business, every threshold of prosperity.
Saraswati सरस्वती
Mahadevi · wisdom
The goddess of wisdom, learning, music, and speech. Consort of Brahma. Patron of every student, scholar, musician, writer, and orator in the Hindu world. The deva of svadhyaya (self-study) made personal.
Durga दुर्गा
Mahadevi · warrior
The warrior goddess. The cosmos's ultimate defender — the consolidated Shakti of all the devas, sent forth to slay the buffalo-demon when no male god could. Patron of Navaratri. The deity who appears when ordinary force has failed and something larger must intervene.
Parvati पार्वती
Mahadevi · devoted householder
The devoted goddess — daughter of the mountain Himavan, consort of Shiva, mother of Ganesh and Kartikeya. The Mahadevi in her gentle-householder form. Her tapas (austerities) to win Shiva is the central paradigm of patient devotion in the Hindu world.
Kartikeya कार्तिकेय
Son of Shiva · spiritual warrior
The warrior son of Shiva and Parvati. Six-faced commander of the deva army. The most-beloved deity in Tamil Nadu (as Murugan). Patron of spiritual warriors — the deva who chases off the demons that stand between the practitioner and liberation.
