👂Shravanaश्रवण
Vishnu's three footprints, the listening ear — the practitioner who hears the sacred and walks where the gods have walked.
The Nakshatra
Shravana (श्रवण, 'the hearing') is the twenty-second nakshatra, sidereal Capricorn 10°00'–23°20', ruled by the Moon and presided over by Vishnu — the preserver, the cosmic deity who in the *Trivikrama* myth crossed the three worlds in three steps to win them back from the asura Bali. The symbol is the *ear* (Shravana from *shru*, 'to hear' — the root of *shruti*, 'that which is heard', the Vedas themselves) and the *three footprints of Vishnu*. Shravana is the nakshatra of *sacred listening* — receiving the teaching, hearing the dharma, the disciple's ear at the foot of the guru. Classical jyotish names Shravana natives studious, scholarly, gifted in language and learning, with a natural ear for music and for the truth in what is being said, often drawn to spiritual teaching and to traditions of *shruti*. The Moon rulership names the *receptive* quality of the listening: Shravana receives the teaching before applying it. The shadow is the *passive listening* — endless reception without action, the perpetual student who never teaches.
When the Moon transits Shravana
The Moon transits Shravana once a sidereal month — a window for *receiving*: the teaching, the audiobook, the lecture, the deep conversation with the elder, the music that opens the heart. Shravana moon is excellent for *anything that requires listening before speaking*.
In love
Shravana love is *attentive* — the partner who actually listens, who hears what was said and what was meant. Reversed: listening-without-action — the partner who hears every confession and never adjusts the behavior.
In work
Teaching (especially traditions of *shruti* — Vedanta, classical music, language), translation, audiobook narration, music, podcasting, journalism, therapy, counseling. Shravana shines wherever the ear is the primary instrument.
The gift
*Sacred reception.* The capacity to hear what is being said — the teaching, the music, the unspoken truth in the conversation — and to receive it with the discipline of *shruti*, the heard-and-held tradition.
The shadow
Listening without doing. Shravana unbalanced receives endlessly without ever acting on what was received — the spiritual seeker who can quote every tradition and embody none of them. The Vishnu-side teaches: the *three footprints* are *taken*; the hearing is the preparation for the walking.
Pair with
Throat — Shravana in Capricorn lives at the throat, the seat of sacred hearing and articulation. Pair Shravana work with throat-chakra practice when the question is *am I letting what I have heard become what I do*.
3 questions to sit with
- What teaching is currently asking for my *Shravana ear* — the deep listening that comes before the response?
- Where am I *listening without doing* — collecting teachings as decoration without letting them shape my life?
- If Vishnu took his three steps across my life today, where would the footprints land — and have I been walking in them?
