The Japanese form of the Indian goddess Sarasvatī. The only female of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin). Arrived in Japan via the *Sutra of Golden Light* (Konkōmyōkyō) in the 6th-8th centuries — and is therefore *not in the Kojiki or Nihon Shoki* (Benzaiten is the cosmic-Buddhist-Indian-import who became a fully-Japanese kami without ever having a Shinto-source-text). The patroness of *music* (the biwa-lute is her instrument), *eloquence* (the etymological Sarasvatī = "the flowing one," the cosmic-river-of-speech), *knowledge* (the Sanskrit-Vedic foundational-goddess of learning), and *water* (always enshrined at islands, springs, and ponds — the cosmic-water-element). Enshrined at the *Three Great Benzaiten of Japan*: *Itsukushima Jinja* in Hiroshima Bay (the iconic floating-torii UNESCO World Heritage shrine), *Enoshima* in Kanagawa (the great Edo-period Benzaiten island-pilgrimage), and *Chikubu-shima* in Lake Biwa (the island-of-the-cosmic-eight-fold-virtues).

Who Benzaiten actually is

Benzaiten (弁才天 / 弁財天, "Eloquence-Talent-Deva" — the alternate spelling 弁財天 substituting *zai* "wealth/treasure" for *sai* "talent" emerged in the medieval-Edo period and reflects the *cosmic-prosperity-association*) is the *cosmic-Indian-Sarasvatī-arrived-in-Japan* figure of the Japanese pantheon — and is the *clearest single example of the honji-suijaku Buddhist-Indian-to-Japanese-Shinto transmission*. The original *Sarasvatī* (सरस्वती, "the flowing one") is the Vedic-Hindu goddess of speech, learning, music, and the now-dried-up Sarasvatī river that the Rig-Veda celebrates as the *cosmic-river-of-speech* (the etymological cognates extending through Avestan *harahvaitī* "the watery one" and the Indo-European root *seru-* "to flow"). She is the wife of Brahmā (one of the Hindu Trimurti), the patroness of *Vāk* (cosmic-speech), and the Hindu-Buddhist goddess of *learning, music, eloquence, and the arts*. She entered the Mahāyāna Buddhist pantheon as a *protective deva* and is mentioned prominently in the *Konkōmyōkyō* (the Sutra of Golden Light, the Mahāyāna sutra in which she is named as a protector-deva who blesses those-who-recite-the-sutra with eloquence, memory, and protection). The *Konkōmyōkyō* was one of the earliest Buddhist sutras transmitted to Japan (mid-6th-c. via the Korean-peninsula-route and Korean-immigrant scholar-monks), and Sarasvatī accompanied it as *Benzaiten*. By the Heian period (794-1185) she was already a major Japanese kami — enshrined at *Chikubu-shima* in Lake Biwa (the island-shrine traditionally founded in the 8th c.), at *Enoshima* in Sagami Bay (founded 552 CE per legend, established by Emperor Kinmei), and at *Itsukushima* in Hiroshima Bay (the legendary 593 CE founding by Saeki-no-Kuramoto). The Heian-and-medieval period developed an elaborate *Mikkyō-Benzaiten theology* in the Shingon and Tendai schools — Benzaiten was understood as the *suijaku-trace of Mahāvairocana Buddha* (Dainichi Nyorai) or of *Vairocana* in his *cosmic-music-Sarasvatī aspect*, and her iconography accumulated *eight arms* (the *Hachi-rin Benzaiten*, the eight-armed-Benzaiten of the medieval tantric tradition — each arm holding a different cosmic-instrument: sword, bow, arrow, vajra-bell, vajra, mani-jewel, key, wheel) in addition to her *standard two-armed-biwa-playing* form. The medieval folk-tradition further developed her *Uga-Benzaiten* form (a syncretism with the indigenous Japanese folk-snake-kami *Ugajin*, depicted as Benzaiten with a *human-headed-white-snake coiled on her head as a crown* — an iconographically-startling Indian-Japanese hybrid form). The Edo period (1603-1868) grouped Benzaiten as the *only female of the Seven Lucky Gods* (*Shichifukujin* 七福神 — the seven who are: Ebisu the Japanese folk-fisherman, Daikokuten ~ Ōkuninushi, Bishamonten the warrior-Indian-Buddhist, Benzaiten the music-Indian-Buddhist, Fukurokuju the longevity-Chinese-Daoist, Jurōjin the longevity-Chinese-Daoist, Hotei the laughing-Chinese-Buddhist) — a cosmic-good-luck-pantheon that has been the most-popular New-Year pilgrimage circuit in Tokyo, Kyoto, and other major cities for the past four hundred years (the *Shichifukujin-meguri* New-Year-seven-shrine-pilgrimage). The 1868 Shinbutsu-bunri *forcibly-separated Benzaiten from Sarasvatī-as-Buddhist-deva*, an administrative-action that left her in an awkward institutional-position — Benzaiten-shrines at Itsukushima, Enoshima, and Chikubu-shima retained her as *Ichikishima-hime-no-Mikoto* (the Munakata-sea-goddess identified-with-Benzaiten) or as *Ugajin* in her folk-snake-form, while *Buddhist Benzaiten temples* (notably at Hōgon-ji on Chikubu-shima which is technically a Shingon-Buddhist temple, not a Shinto shrine) retained her as Benzaiten-Buddhist-deva — and most Japanese visitors do not know which-institutional-form they are visiting. The Benzaiten-register is the *cosmic-Indian-Sarasvatī-arrived-in-Japan*, the *patroness-of-music-eloquence-knowledge-and-water*, the *only-female-of-the-Seven-Lucky-Gods*, the *enshrined-on-islands-and-springs-and-ponds*, the *Buddhist-deva-fully-Japanized*, the *medieval-Uga-Benzaiten-with-snake-crown*, and the *most-cosmic-example-of-non-native-deity-becoming-fully-Japanese-kami*.

Iconography

A *graceful seated female-figure in flowing-robes playing a biwa-lute* — the standard Japanese Benzaiten iconography that derives from the Indian-Buddhist Sarasvatī iconography (where she plays the *vīṇā*, the Indian-Hindu lute, which became the Japanese *biwa* in the cosmic-syncretic-translation). In the *eight-armed Mikkyō-tantric form* (Hachi-rin Benzaiten): standing or seated with eight arms each holding a different cosmic-instrument (sword, bow, arrow, vajra-bell, vajra, mani-jewel, key, wheel). In the *Uga-Benzaiten folk-form*: seated with a *human-headed-white-snake coiled on her head as a crown* (the Uga-jin syncretism). In the *Shichifukujin Seven-Lucky-Gods Edo-iconographic group*: seated in a treasure-ship with the six male luck-gods, playing the biwa. Colors: pearl-white (the foundational), gold (the Indian-cosmic-radiance), pale-blue (the water-element), pearl-pink (the music-grace). Sacred objects: the *biwa-lute* (the central instrument), the *snake* (the Uga-jin folk-syncretism, also the white-snake-as-cosmic-money-spirit), the *jewel* (the cosmic-wish-fulfilling mani), the *eight-armed tantric weapons*. Sacred sites: *Itsukushima Jinja* in Hiroshima Bay (the iconic floating-torii UNESCO World Heritage shrine, technically dedicated to the three Munakata-sea-goddesses with Ichikishima-hime identified-with-Benzaiten — the most-photographed shrine-image in Japan); *Enoshima Jinja* in Kanagawa (the great Edo-period Benzaiten island-pilgrimage near Tokyo, with the famous *Hadaka-Benten* "naked-Benten" statue and the Iwaya Caves); *Chikubu-shima* in Lake Biwa (the cosmic-eight-fold-virtues-island with Hōgon-ji Buddhist temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine — the cosmic-Buddhist-Shinto-Benzaiten-syncretic-island par excellence); the *Inokashira Benzaiten* in Tokyo (Inokashira Park, the great-Tokyo-central Benzaiten); the *Senso-ji-precincts Benzaiten* in Tokyo Asakusa; and the *Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku-jinja* in Kamakura (the famous "money-washing-Benzaiten" where pilgrims wash coins in the cave-spring for cosmic-prosperity-multiplication, the most-popular folk-Benzaiten practice in contemporary Japan).

How to invoke Benzaiten

Benzaiten is invoked at moments of *cosmic-music-and-eloquence-and-knowledge-and-water-prosperity*. The annual *Benten-sai* festivals at her major shrines (Enoshima's Hatsu-Sai in early-April, Itsukushima's Kangensai in summer with the music-on-boats-performance, Chikubu-shima's August festival) are major Benzaiten-festivals. The *Zeniarai-Benzaiten money-washing folk-practice* (wash coins in the cave-spring for cosmic-prosperity-multiplication, especially at the Kamakura Ugafuku-jinja but also at many smaller Benzaiten-shrines across Japan) is the *most-popular contemporary folk-Benzaiten practice*. The *Shichifukujin-meguri* New-Year-seven-shrine-pilgrimage (in Tokyo: the Yamanote-area or the Shitamachi-area pilgrimage circuits) is the foundational annual cosmic-good-luck-pilgrimage. Offer: *uncooked rice*, *sake*, *coins to be ritually-washed in the cave-spring*, *eggs* (the cosmic-snake-Uga-jin offering, white-snakes are believed to be fed eggs), *biwa-music-performance itself as offering* (the cosmic-instrument is the cosmic-substance), and at the larger shrines *new-musical-instruments* (the cosmic-bestowal-of-musical-talent on a young musician at the shrine). Especially called by: *musicians, performers, public-speakers, writers* (the cosmic-Sarasvatī-cosmic-river-of-speech register), *students and scholars* (the cosmic-patroness-of-learning), *those whose work is in cosmic-water-element* (the cosmic-island-spring-pond cosmic-figure), *those seeking cosmic-prosperity-multiplication* (the Zeniarai-money-washing register), *those navigating the cosmic-non-native-becoming-fully-Japanese register* (the cosmic-figure of cosmic-foreign-import-fully-integrated-into-the-cosmic-Japanese-pantheon, the cosmic-cultural-translation par excellence), and *those whose cosmic-work is the cosmic-eight-armed-tantric Mikkyō-multitasking* (the cosmic-figure who is *simultaneously playing the biwa and holding the sword and the vajra and the jewel and the key and the wheel*).

In love

Benzaiten in love is the *cosmic-music-and-eloquence-partner*. The Benzaiten-partner is the cosmic-figure whose register is *the cosmic-river-of-speech*, whose presence-in-the-relationship is *the cosmic-music-and-eloquence-and-knowledge-and-water*, whose love-language is *the cosmic-biwa-melody* that creates-the-cosmic-substance-of-the-relationship. The cosmic-Benzaiten-partner is often *literally a musician or a speaker or a writer*, but in the deeper sense is the partner whose cosmic-presence *is itself a kind of music* in the relationship. The shadow is the *Benzaiten-without-Uga-jin-snake-crown* — the partner whose Indian-Buddhist-graceful cosmic-form has been *separated from her medieval-folk-Japanese-snake-crown earth-cosmic-form*, the partner who has been allowed to be the *pretty-biwa-playing-goddess* but not the *uncomfortable-snake-crowned-folk-syncretic-figure*. The other shadow: the *Benzaiten-Shinbutsu-bunri-administratively-separated* — the partner whose cosmic-Indian-Buddhist-and-Japanese-Shinto cosmic-substance has been *administratively-fragmented* (forced to be one cultural-form-or-the-other, not the cosmic-syncretic-whole).

In work

Benzaiten in work is the *cosmic-Indian-import-fully-Japanized*. The Benzaiten-figure is the *cosmic-non-native employee or partner who has become fully-integrated into the cosmic-institution* — the foreign-hire whose Indian-Sarasvatī-cosmic-substance has been transmitted via the cosmic-Konkōmyōkyō-equivalent (a corporate-equivalent of the Sutra-of-Golden-Light, the cosmic-vehicle-of-transmission) and who has *become a fully-Japanese kami* in the cosmic-institutional-pantheon. The cosmic-Benzaiten-function is *music-and-eloquence-and-knowledge-and-water* — the figure whose work is the *cosmic-river-of-speech of the institution* (the head-of-communications, the lead-writer, the chief-academic, the chief-musician). The cosmic-Benzaiten-only-female-of-the-Seven-Lucky-Gods register is the *cosmic-only-woman in a cosmic-otherwise-all-male council* — the cosmic-pattern of being *uniquely-female in a cosmic-good-luck-pantheon* that has cosmic-particular-implications. The shadow is the institution that has *Shinbutsu-bunri-administratively-separated its Benzaiten-Indian-import-figure* from her cosmic-non-Japanese cultural-substance, forcing her to be *either-fully-Japanese-or-fully-foreign* and erasing the cosmic-syncretic-Buddhist-Shinto-fully-integrated-Indian-cosmic-substance.

The gift

Benzaiten gives the *cosmic-cultural-translation*. The gift is the *Sarasvatī-arrived-in-Japan-via-the-Sutra-of-Golden-Light-and-fully-Japanized* — the recognition that *cosmic-non-native-figures can become fully-Japanese-kami via the cosmic-Buddhist-transmission-vehicle*, that the cosmic-river-of-speech that started in the Indo-European-Sarasvatī-river-Vedic-substance has *flowed into the Japanese-biwa-music-Benzaiten cosmic-form* without losing its cosmic-substance. The gift is the *cosmic-music-and-eloquence-and-knowledge-and-water as one cosmic-substance* — the recognition that *music and speech and learning and water are not four separate cosmic-domains but one cosmic-flowing-substance*, and that the cosmic-patroness of any-one-of-them is *necessarily the patroness of all four*. The gift is the *cosmic-only-female-of-the-Seven-Lucky-Gods* — the recognition that *the cosmic-good-luck-pantheon is structurally cosmic-uneven-by-gender* and that being *cosmic-uniquely-female in such a council* is itself a cosmic-distinctive-position-with-cosmic-distinctive-responsibilities. The gift is finally the *Zeniarai-money-washing folk-practice* — the recognition that *cosmic-prosperity is cosmic-multiplied by being ritually-washed in the cosmic-cave-spring*, that the cosmic-water-element of Benzaiten is *literally* the cosmic-prosperity-multiplier when ritualized.

The shadow

Benzaiten has been *administratively-fragmented* by the 1868 Shinbutsu-bunri in an even-more-awkward way than most kami because she is *Indian-Buddhist-imported-to-begin-with*. The 1868 forcible-separation of Shinto-kami from Buddhist-deva left Benzaiten in a *cosmic-institutional-limbo* — her *Shinto-shrines* (Itsukushima, Enoshima Jinja, Tsukubusuma) re-identified her as the *Munakata-sea-goddess Ichikishima-hime* (one of the three sea-goddesses born from Susanoo's sword) or as *Uga-jin the folk-snake-kami*, erasing her *Indian-Buddhist-Sarasvatī cosmic-substance*; her *Buddhist-temples* (Hōgon-ji on Chikubu-shima, Zeniarai-Ugafuku-jinja in Kamakura which is technically institutionally-mixed) retained her as *Buddhist Benzaiten-deva*. Most contemporary Japanese visitors *do not know which institutional-form they are visiting* and *do not know that she is originally the Indian Vedic-Hindu Sarasvatī* — the cosmic-cultural-translation has been so thorough that the *cosmic-Indian-origin has been substantially-forgotten*. The further shadow: the *cosmic-Uga-Benzaiten medieval folk-form with the human-headed-white-snake coiled as a crown* has been *substantially-sanitized in modern depictions* — most contemporary Benzaiten-iconography is the *graceful-biwa-playing form* with the *uncomfortable-snake-crown folk-syncretic register* substantially-erased. The deepest shadow: the *cosmic-Benzaiten-as-only-female-of-the-Seven-Lucky-Gods* has been *progressively-eroticized in modern popular-culture* — the *Hadaka-Benten "naked-Benten" statues* (especially at Enoshima Hetsumiya), originally medieval cosmic-spiritual-eroticism in the Mikkyō-tantric-register, have been *flattened into generic-female-cosmic-pin-up* iconography, with the cosmic-Sarasvatī-cosmic-river-of-speech-knowledge-and-music substantive-content substantially-displaced. Contemporary readings of Benzaiten must explicitly recover the *cosmic-Indian-Sarasvatī-Vedic-substance*, the *cosmic-Buddhist-Konkōmyōkyō-transmission-vehicle*, the *cosmic-Uga-jin-folk-snake-crown medieval-syncretic-register*, and the *cosmic-only-female-of-the-Seven-Lucky-Gods position-with-its-cosmic-distinctive-responsibilities* — against the contemporary-tourist-flattening into *cute-biwa-playing-goddess*.
