Fear · the 5 fear-remedies · 2 of 38
For known, nameable fears — the things you can list. Bach's remedy for the everyday phobias and worldly anxieties.
What Mimulus actually treats
Mimulus is Bach's remedy for fears with a name. Fear of public speaking. Fear of flying. Fear of the dentist, the dark, the spider, the conversation. Bach distinguished it from Aspen (vague dread without source) and Rock Rose (acute terror) precisely on this point: Mimulus is for the fears you can list. Bach saw the Mimulus type as the shy, sensitive person who is easily frightened by ordinary life — and whose courage, when it comes, is quiet and steady rather than dramatic.
The state it meets
Specific, nameable fears. The list. The phobia. The anticipatory anxiety before a known event — the meeting, the flight, the procedure, the difficult conversation. The shy retreat. The held breath before the door opens.
The shift it brings
Quiet courage. The capacity to walk toward the known fear without grand declarations. The fear remains, but the action becomes possible alongside it.
In love
Mimulus in love is the partner afraid of the conversation that needs to happen — afraid of conflict, afraid of being misread, afraid of the silence after. The work is small: one sentence at a time, with the fear acknowledged, not denied.
In work
Mimulus in work is the brilliant introvert dreading the keynote, the engineer dreading the demo, the operator dreading the difficult feedback. The remedy supports the move forward without performing fearlessness.
A 5-minute practice
Name the fear out loud, specifically, in one sentence. ("I am afraid that when I open my mouth in the meeting, my voice will shake.") Naming reduces the fear by ~30% in lab studies (Lieberman 2007 — affect labeling). Then do the smallest first step.

3 key questions
- What is the specific, nameable fear sitting between me and the action I keep postponing — and can I say it out loud, in one sentence?
- If I imagined the worst case fully, in detail, would I survive it? What changes when I let myself finish the imagining?
- What is the smallest possible first step I could take toward this fear today — small enough that the fear cannot block it?
