Ra rꜥ (Ra / Re)
Solar · king of the gods
King of the gods. The midday sun, the self-created creator of Heliopolis, who sails his solar barque across the sky by day and through the twelve hours of the underworld by night — fighting Apophis the chaos-serpent at the seventh hour, emerging reborn at dawn. The eye of Ra is the goddess (Hathor, Sekhmet, Bastet, Wadjet — depending on the cycle) who carries his fierce power back when he sends it forth.
Horus ḥr (Hor / Heru)
Solar · falcon of kingship
The falcon. Sky-god, sun-god, kingship-god — the son of Isis and the dead-and-resurrected Osiris, who avenged his father by defeating his uncle Set in eighty years of mythic combat to inherit the throne of Egypt. The living pharaoh was the living Horus; the dead pharaoh became Osiris. The wedjat (eye of Horus) — the eye Set tore out and Thoth restored — is the most-worn protective amulet in all of Egyptian religion.
Hathor ḥwt-ḥr (Hwt-Hor — "House of Horus")
Solar · golden cow-mother
The golden one. Goddess of love, beauty, music, dance, motherhood, joy, drunkenness, and the Western mountain-of-the-dead — and the cow-headed mother / wife / daughter of Ra whose dual register as Hathor-the-gentle and Sekhmet-the-fierce is the Egyptian pantheon's clearest teaching that love and rage are the same goddess depending on which way she is sent.
Sekhmet sḫmt (Sekhmet — "the Powerful")
Solar · the powerful lioness
The powerful. The lioness-headed eye-of-Ra goddess of slaughter and healing — the fierce-aspect Hathor became when Ra sent her forth to destroy mankind, who drank red-beer mistaking it for blood and woke as Hathor again. Patron of physicians and surgeons (in Egypt, the doctor was Sekhmet's priest). The goddess whose name was so dangerous that pharaohs installed hundreds of her statues at Karnak to absorb her wrath.
Osiris wsjr (Wesir / Asar)
Osirian · lord of the dead
Lord of the dead. The first who died and rose. King of Egypt murdered by his brother Set, dismembered into fourteen pieces, gathered back together by his wife Isis, and resurrected to become the eternal judge of the dead in the Hall of Two Truths. Every dead pharaoh became Osiris; every Egyptian who passed the Negative Confession joined his court. The grain-god whose body is the green wheat rising from the black silt after the inundation.
Isis ꜣst (Aset / Iset)
Osirian · throne, great of magic
Great of magic. The throne. Mother of Horus, wife of Osiris, mourner-gatherer-resurrector — the goddess who traveled the length of Egypt to gather her murdered husband's fourteen pieces and revived him with magic long enough to conceive the falcon-heir. The Lady of Ten Thousand Names whose cult spread across the Roman Empire, who was the last pagan goddess worshipped in the Mediterranean, and whose iconography became the direct template for the Christian Madonna.
Anubis jnpw (Inpu / Anpu)
Osirian · jackal of embalming
The jackal. Lord of the embalming-tent, conductor of souls, operator of the scales in the Hall of Two Truths — the black jackal-headed god who walks the dead from the moment of death through the mummification, through the underworld journey, to the Weighing of the Heart before Osiris. Patron of embalmers and morticians. The single most-recognizable Egyptian deity in pop culture, and the most-misrepresented.
Set stẖ (Setekh / Sutekh / Seth)
Osirian · red-land disturber
Lord of the red land. The desert-storm god, brother and murderer of Osiris — and also, in his other and much older face, the defender of Ra's solar barque who slays Apophis the chaos-serpent at the seventh hour of the night. The single most-theologically-complex god in the Egyptian pantheon: simultaneously the cosmic villain of the Osirian cycle and the cosmic protector of the solar cycle. The patron of Upper Egypt for millennia. The most-rehabilitated and most-demonized deity in the pantheon, depending on the dynasty and the cult-center.
Ptah ptḥ (Ptah)
Memphite · master craftsman
Master craftsman of the gods. The opener. Creator-god of Memphis whose theology held the most-radically-intellectual creation-myth in the ancient world: Ptah created the universe *by thought and speech alone*, his heart conceiving and his tongue commanding into being — fifteen centuries before the Logos-theology of John's Gospel, in the Memphite Theology on the Shabaka Stone. Patron of craftsmen, architects, sculptors, masons. Husband of Sekhmet, father of Nefertem.
Thoth ḏḥwty (Djehuty)
Memphite · scribe of the gods
Scribe of the gods. Ibis-headed lord of writing, mathematics, magic, time, and the moon — inventor of hieroglyphs, recorder at the Weighing of the Heart, the mediator who settled the eighty-year court case between Horus and Set, the god who restored the torn-out eye of Horus. Three-times-great (Trismegistus), the Hellenistic source-figure for *Hermes Trismegistus* and the entire Western Hermetic tradition.
Ma'at mꜣꜥt (Ma'at)
Memphite · cosmic truth-feather
Cosmic truth. The principle that holds the cosmos together. The feather against which every dead heart is weighed in the Hall of Two Truths — and the foundational ethical-political concept of Egyptian civilization for three thousand years, by which every pharaoh's legitimacy was measured: did the king bring Ma'at to the throne, or did he allow Isfet (chaos, falsehood, injustice) to spread?
Bastet bꜣstt (Bastet / Bast / Ubasti)
Memphite · cat-goddess of joy
Cat-goddess of joy. Lady of the East, patron of the household, of fertility, of music, dance, perfume, and the protection of children. The gentle peaceful sister-counterpart to fierce-Sekhmet — the same eye-of-Ra goddess in her calm-cat-aspect rather than her destroying-lioness-aspect. The most-loved deity in Egyptian popular religion. The Festival of Bastet at Bubastis was the largest annual celebration in the entire Egyptian religious calendar.
