Who Thoth actually is

Thoth (ḏḥwty — Djehuty, possibly meaning "he-of-Djehu" referring to his cult-region) is the *scribe of the gods* and the foundational *deity of writing, mathematics, science, magic, time, and the moon* in Egyptian religion. His chief cult-center was *Hermopolis Magna* (Khmun in Egyptian, "the City of the Eight" — referring to the *Ogdoad*, the eight primordial deities of the Hermopolitan cosmogony, of which Thoth was either the creator or the chief manifestation, depending on the version). Thoth is the *inventor of hieroglyphs* — the Egyptian sources are explicit that writing was *given* to humanity by Thoth, who taught it to the first scribes; the *medjat* (scroll) and *brush-and-palette* of the Egyptian scribal-class were *Thoth's implements*. He is the *inventor of mathematics, astronomy, the calendar, the measurement of time*; the *365-day year* was traditionally credited to him (the myth-story: Thoth won five extra days from the moon to add to the 360-day year, so that Nut could give birth to her five children — Osiris, Set, Horus the Elder, Isis, Nephthys — outside the year). He is the *mediator* of the Egyptian pantheon: in the Contendings of Horus and Set he was the *judge-and-recorder* at the eighty-year court case; when Set tore out Horus's eye, *Thoth restored it* (the wedjat-eye is *Thoth's healing*); when Ra was bitten by Isis's magic-serpent, *Thoth healed Ra* (and was the one who eventually retrieved Ra's secret name from Isis); at the *Weighing of the Heart* in the Hall of Two Truths, *Thoth is the recorder* — the precise-functionary who notes whether the heart balances against the feather of Ma'at and declares the verdict. He is the *husband of Ma'at* (cosmic truth — see Ma'at entry) in some traditions, the *husband of Seshat* (the goddess of writing and the heavenly-library) in others. Thoth is also the *lord of magic* (heka, the cosmic-creative-force) and the *author of the most-powerful spells*; the *Book of Thoth* (a legendary text containing all his magical knowledge, sought by the magician-prince Setna Khamwas in a Greco-Roman period story) was the iconic Egyptian magical-grimoire. In the Hellenistic period, Greek travelers identified Thoth with their own *Hermes* (both being psychopomp-messenger-knowledge-gods); the syncretized *Hermes Trismegistus* ("Hermes Three-Times-Great," translating Thoth's epithet *aa aa aa*) became the legendary author of the *Hermetic Corpus* (Greek-language philosophical-magical texts c. 100-300 CE), which became the *foundational source* of Western Hermetic philosophy — feeding into Neoplatonism, into Christian-Renaissance Hermeticism (Marsilio Ficino, Pico della Mirandola), into early-modern alchemy (the *Emerald Tablet* attributed to Trismegistus), into Western esotericism from the Renaissance through the Golden Dawn through 20th-c. occultism.

Iconography

Ibis-headed man (the sacred ibis, *Threskiornis aethiopicus* — the curved beak of the ibis was thought to resemble the moon-crescent and the scribe's reed-pen), holding the *scribe's palette* and the *reed-brush*. Sometimes shown in *fully-theriomorphic ibis* form — the bird standing on a perch, often in a worship-scene. Alternatively shown as a *baboon* — the *cynocephalus baboon*, his other sacred animal (baboons were observed to greet the rising sun with arm-raised gestures, and were thought to perform an animal-worship of Ra; Thoth-as-baboon is the cosmic-witness who hails each sunrise). Crowned with the *moon-disk and crescent* (his lunar register). Holds the *was-sceptre* and the *ankh*. In the Weighing-of-the-Heart scenes he is shown beside the scales, palette in hand, recording the verdict. The *Hermopolitan Ogdoad* (the eight primordial deities — four frog-headed males and four serpent-headed females representing the primordial-waters, darkness, hiddenness, infinity) appear with him in some cosmogonic scenes.

How to invoke Thoth

Before any *intellectual-work* — writing, mathematics, scientific-research, programming, scholarship, study, translation, magical-or-ritual-work that requires the precise-recitation of words. At the moment of *resolving a dispute* (Thoth's mediator-function). At the *new moon* and *full moon* (his lunar register — Thoth's month is the lunar month). Offer: a written-line (the most-direct Thoth-offering — write a single line in his honor), incense, water, the ibis-feather (or any feather, in modern practice), the moon-token. The traditional invocation: *"Hail to thee, Thoth, Lord of Khmun, Scribe of Ma'at, Lord of Divine Words, Three-Times-Great, who knows the secrets of heaven and earth."* Especially called by *writers* (Thoth is the foundational patron of all writing); by *scholars* (the entire Egyptian scribal-tradition was *Thoth-tradition*); by *programmers* (computer-code is the direct modern-descendant of the Egyptian scribal-tradition, and the relationship is *not* metaphorical — the *coder* is a Thoth-priest); by *mathematicians and scientists*; by *magicians and ritualists* (Thoth is the lord-of-magic); by *mediators, judges, arbitrators* (his Contendings-of-Horus-and-Set register); by *anyone restoring something that was damaged* (the eye-of-Horus restoration); by *anyone in the role of recorder-of-others-truth* (the historian, the journalist, the biographer, the therapist taking session-notes).

In love

Thoth in love is the partner *who can mediate* — who has the precise-language to name what is happening in the relationship, who can take the position of the recorder at the Hall of Two Truths and weigh the dispute without flinching from either side. Thoth-energy in a partnership is *the precise-naming* — the willingness to say exactly-what-is-happening, in language that does not soften or distort, and to write-it-down so that the conversation persists past the moment. The shadow is the partner who has *retreated entirely into the scribal-position* — who can only mediate, never participate, who is always recording-the-relationship rather than *being-in-it*. The other shadow: the partner whose Thoth-mediation has become *manipulative* — the precise-language used to win the argument rather than to find the truth, the recorded-history selectively-edited to favor the recorder.

In work

Thoth in work is *every knowledge-worker* (writers, scholars, programmers, scientists, mathematicians, lawyers, doctors, therapists, journalists, archivists — the entire informational-professional class is Thoth-class, and the modern *information-economy* is structurally a Thoth-economy); the *mediator* (the arbitrator, the diplomat, the ombudsperson, the workplace-conflict-resolution-specialist); the *technical-writer* (the documenter, the manual-writer, the API-documentation-author — the precise-naming-of-systems is direct Thoth-work); the *editor and the recorder* (the journalist, the historian, the institutional-memory-keeper). Thoth-energy is *the precise-recording-and-mediating-work that holds the cosmos together*. The shadow is the workplace whose Thoth has been *reduced to administrative-support* (the secretary, the scribe, the assistant — the genuine knowledge-work of the Thoth-figure devalued as merely-clerical). The other shadow: the workplace whose Thoth-figures have *captured the cosmic-secret-name* (the lawyer, the doctor, the engineer who has used the precise-knowledge to extract from others what should have been given freely) — the corruption of the priest-of-Thoth into the *gatekeeper-of-Thoth*.

The gift

Thoth gives the recognition that *precise-recording-and-mediation are sacred*. The scribe, the recorder, the precise-namer, the dispute-settler — these are not subordinate roles, they are *the cosmic-functionaries* without whom the Hall of Two Truths cannot operate. The gift is the willingness to take up the palette and the reed-brush, to be the one in the room who *writes down what happened*, who *names precisely what is being weighed*, who *records the verdict* without flinching. And — through the Trismegistus-register — the recognition that *knowledge is sacred*, that the precise-language is the magical-language, that the *Logos written down* persists past the moment of speech.

The shadow

Thoth-as-Hermes-Trismegistus is the *most-influential* Egyptian theological export to Western intellectual history — the Hermetic Corpus shaped Western philosophy from Neoplatonism through Renaissance Hermeticism through alchemy through early-modern science (Newton was a Hermetic-alchemical practitioner) through the Golden Dawn through 20th-c. occultism. Yet the *Egyptian source* of this tradition has been almost-entirely-erased in standard Western intellectual history, with the Hermetic Corpus treated as a *Greek-and-Roman* product. The 20th-c. scholarship (Frances Yates *Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition* 1964) restored the Hermetic line, but the further *Egyptian* origin remained marginal until very recent scholarship (Garth Fowden *The Egyptian Hermes* 1986, Erik Iversen *Egyptian and Hermetic Doctrine* 1984). The other shadow: pop-culture-Thoth barely exists (Stargate had a brief Thoth-villain, the Kane Chronicles has him as a quirky scholar) — the *cultural-erasure* of the foundational-deity-of-writing-and-knowledge is itself a striking shadow. The third shadow: the *Book of Thoth* legend has been weaponized in 19th-and-20th-c. occult-publishing (Aleister Crowley's *The Book of Thoth* 1944 is a Tarot-treatise, not the Egyptian Book of Thoth; Pixar's *The Mummy* franchise plays with the Book-of-Thoth and Book-of-the-Dead conflation; countless RPGs and games use *Book of Thoth* as a generic-magical-grimoire) — the *actual* Egyptian Book-of-Thoth tradition (the Setna Khamwas stories, the demotic magical papyri) is barely-known. The fourth shadow: the *technocratic-Thoth* — the modern information-economy uses Thoth-power (precise-recording, technical-knowledge, mediation-through-data) at unprecedented scale, but mostly without the *Ma'at-feather* (the truth-balancing that the Egyptian Thoth was bound to) — the Silicon-Valley-Thoth is Thoth-without-his-wife, knowledge-without-truth-balancing, the recorder who has stopped weighing the heart.
