Her temples stretched from Britain to the Nile to Mesopotamia; her cult was the principal rival to early Christianity in the Mediterranean for three centuries. Her central myth is the *Osiris cycle*: her husband Osiris is murdered by his brother Set, dismembered, and the pieces scattered across Egypt. Isis, by the force of her magic, her grief, and her unbroken devotion, gathers thirteen of the fourteen pieces (the fourteenth, the phallus, was eaten by a fish in the Nile), reassembles him, and conceives Horus posthumously by her own magical art. The traditional invocation, drawn from the Lamentations of Isis and Nephthys (a 4th-century BCE Egyptian funerary text), is *Isis the Great, Mistress of Magic, Mother of Horus, gather the pieces I cannot find on my own, and bring back to life what grief is asking me to resurrect.* The practice is the *gathering ritual*: name the scattered thing — the lost relationship, the dismembered project, the parts of self that the trauma scattered. Write each piece on a separate slip of paper. Sit at an altar (a flat surface with a candle) and physically gather the slips into a single pile, slowly, naming each. The act is older than the modern practice; it is the magical-imitative grammar of the Osiris myth itself. The myth gathered Osiris because Osiris had been *unjustly* murdered; some scatterings are recoverable, others are completions.
