Anu An (Sumerian)
Foundational · Sky-Father
The sky-father. The most-remote-of-the-gods (so remote he barely appears in narrative — present in every cosmogony as *origin*, almost absent from every story as *agent*). The literal pictogram of *deity* in cuneiform — the eight-pointed star DINGIR — *is Anu*. King of the Anunnaki. The figure whose castration in the Hittite Kumarbi cycle became, three traditions later, the Greek Kronos-castrates-Ouranos narrative. The original sky-father from whom every later sky-father (Zeus, Jupiter, the Vedic Dyaus Pitar, the Indo-European *Dyēus*) is downstream.
Enlil En-líl (Sumerian, "Lord-of-the-Wind/Storm")
Foundational · Storm-King
The storm-king. The operational sovereign of the cosmos that Anu has retired from. Lord of the Ekur ("Mountain-House") at Nippur — the religious capital of all Sumer. The god who *actually runs* the universe — who decides which kingdoms rise and fall, who sends the flood that nearly destroyed humanity (and was talked-out-of-finishing-the-job by Enki), who holds the Tablet of Destinies on Anu's behalf, and whose word is the canonical *fait accompli* in Sumerian theology. The closest Mesopotamian deity to the later Indo-European storm-king pattern (Zeus, Thor, Indra, Perun) — but earlier than all of them.
Enki En-ki (Sumerian, "Lord-of-the-Earth/Below")
Foundational · Water-Wisdom
The water-wisdom god. The trickster-sage. The lord of the freshwater Apsu (the cosmic sweet-water aquifer beneath the earth — the source of every river and well). The figure who *secretly saves humanity* from Enlil's flood by whispering through the reed-wall to Atra-Hasis (and through this act, Enki becomes the *patron-of-cleverness-against-cosmic-fiat*, the one who finds the *loophole* in the irrevocable decree). Inventor of writing, of irrigation, of metallurgy, of medicine, of every craft of civilization. Patron of every Mesopotamian magician (the *āšipu*-priests who performed incantations were all *priests of Ea*). Father of Marduk. The closest Mesopotamian equivalent to the *Greek Hermes/Prometheus/Hephaestus* fused into one figure — but earlier than all of them by 1500 years.
Tiamat Tiâmat (Akkadian, "the sea")
Foundational · Primordial Salt-Sea
The primordial salt-sea. The mother of all the gods (and then their first cosmic adversary). The dragon-mother whose body, *split in half by Marduk's sword*, becomes the sky-dome above and the earth below. The cosmic-feminine-as-chaos that every monotheistic creation-story has been *trying to suppress for three thousand years* (the Genesis *tehom* is her demythologized corpse, the Christian dragon is her diluted shadow). The original *defeated cosmic mother* whose dismemberment is the *foundational act of patriarchal cosmology* — and one of the most-politically-significant theological narratives in the history of religion.
Shamash Utu (Sumerian)
Bright · Sun & Cosmic Judge
The sun-god. The cosmic-judge. The lord-of-justice whose light reaches everywhere and therefore *sees everything*. The figure who handed the Code of Hammurabi to Hammurabi himself (the upper relief of the Stele in the Louvre depicts the transmission). Patron of the *oath-on-the-Sun* — every legal proceeding in Mesopotamia for two thousand years was witnessed-by-Shamash. The closest Mesopotamian equivalent of the *Egyptian Ma'at + Greek Apollo + Roman Sol Iustitiae* fused into one figure — and the *direct iconographic source* of every later "lawgiver receives the law from a celestial figure" image (including Moses receiving the tablets from Yahweh on Sinai, which is structurally identical to the Stele-of-Hammurabi relief).
Sin Nanna (Sumerian)
Bright · Moon of Ur
The moon-god of Ur. The cosmic-timekeeper whose monthly waxing-and-waning *defines the calendar of the ancient Near East* (and through that lineage defines the Jewish, Islamic, and Christian liturgical calendars to this day). The *father* of Shamash (sun) and Inanna (Venus) — in Mesopotamian theology the *moon is older than the sun*, and the day begins at sunset (a calendrical convention inherited by Judaism and Islam from Sumer). The bull-of-the-night-sky whose horns are the lunar crescent. Patron of every cattle-herder, every shepherd, every figure whose work *follows the rhythm of the moon*. The deity whose Harran-temple was the *last surviving pagan-religious site of the Mesopotamian tradition* (the Sabians of Harran maintained Sin-worship into the 11th c. CE).
Inanna Inanna (Sumerian, "Lady of Heaven")
Bright · Queen of Heaven
Queen of Heaven. Goddess of love AND war (the canonical Mesopotamian dual-register that *every later love-goddess inherited* in some form — Aphrodite-Ares, Venus-Mars). The planet Venus as both morning-and-evening star. The figure who *descended to the underworld*, was killed by her sister Ereshkigal, hung as a corpse on a hook for three days, was resurrected by Enki's craft, and *returned bringing demons who took her lover Dumuzi to the underworld in her place* — the foundational dying-and-rising narrative of world literature, predating the Persephone myth by 1500 years and the Christian resurrection narrative by 2000. The most-poeticized deity in the Mesopotamian corpus. Subject of the world's first-named-author Enheduanna's hymns. Lover-of-Dumuzi whose *sacred-marriage rite* with the Sumerian king is the foundational *sacred-marriage* ritual of ancient religion.
Marduk Marduk (Akkadian)
Bright · Young Storm-King
Patron-god of Babylon. The young storm-king who *alone agreed to face Tiamat* when no older god would. Slayer of Tiamat. Holder of the Tablet of Destinies. Inheritor of Enlil's *fifty names*. The cosmic-warrior whose victory *literally founded the ordered cosmos* in the Enuma Elish (he split Tiamat's body to make the sky and earth, set the stars in their courses, organized the calendar, decreed the boundaries of all things). The deity whose theological-ascent *is the political-theology of Babylon* — the Enuma Elish was annually recited at the *akītu* New Year Festival to *renew Babylon's claim* to be the *cosmic capital* of the world. The closest Mesopotamian deity to the *Indo-European young-storm-king* archetype (Indra, Thor, Zeus) — but ALSO the closest Mesopotamian model for the *later Yahweh* (the Babylonian-exile prophets *knew exactly* who Marduk was, and the *anti-Marduk polemic* runs through Second Isaiah).
Nergal Nergal (Akkadian)
Travelers · War & Plague
God of war and plague. Lord of the scorching summer-sun that *kills crops and people equally*. The planet Mars. Husband-by-conquest (or by-marriage, depending on the version) of Ereshkigal, queen of the underworld — making Nergal the *second-king of the dead*. The cosmic-violence whose unleashing is the Erra Epic — when Erra/Nergal *gets bored* and decides to *commit acts of mass-destruction for sport*, plagues sweep the cities, kingdoms fall, and only the intervention of the wiser god Marduk and Erra's own minister Ishum eventually calms him. The patron of every soldier, every mercenary, every figure whose work is *organized violence* — and the canonical Mesopotamian *acknowledgment that cosmic-violence is a real cosmological force that cannot be suppressed but only managed*.
Nabu Nabû (Akkadian, "the announcer/herald")

God of writing, of wisdom-by-script, of the cuneiform-stylus. Patron of every Mesopotamian scribe (the *dub-sar* class who maintained the entire Mesopotamian intellectual edifice — astronomy, mathematics, law, literature, medicine, divination). The planet Mercury. Son of Marduk and Sarpanit. Husband of Tashmetum (the goddess of dictation-and-listening). Holder of the Tablet of Destinies on Marduk's behalf — the *cosmic-scribe* who *literally writes down what fates are to come*. The deity whose name *became the Hebrew biblical name Nebo* — and Mount Nebo (where Moses died and was buried, Deuteronomy 34) is *named for him*. The figure who *recovered the Tablet of Destinies* from the Anzu bird (which had stolen it from Enlil), and who *defeated Asag* the demon of disease that had been ravaging the land. Patron of agriculture, of irrigation-engineering, and of war (the canonical *farmer-becomes-soldier* register that defined the entire Mesopotamian agricultural-military complex). The planet Saturn in late Babylonian astrology — the *patient-and-relentless* register, the *slow-moving outermost-visible-planet* that pairs with Ninurta's *patient-and-relentless* canonical-narrative. The closest Mesopotamian model for the later Roman *Mars-and-Saturn-fused* (the *Saturnalia* agricultural-military winter-festival inherits the Ninurta-register).
Ereshkigal Ereš-ki-gal (Sumerian, "Queen of the Great Below")

Queen of the underworld. The Irkalla — the *Great Below*. Elder sister of Inanna, who *killed her with the eye-of-death* and hung her corpse on a hook for three days when Inanna descended. Wife of Nergal (after his diplomatic-or-forcible descent). Holder of the underworld of the dead — the *Mesopotamian Hades-equivalent* but a *female* one (and 1500 years earlier than Persephone). The figure whose grief is so cosmic-and-permanent that Enki had to *send two small mourner-figures crafted from his fingernail-clay to mourn-with-her* until she relented and released Inanna — the canonical Mesopotamian recognition that *the only relief for cosmic-feminine-grief is being-mourned-with, not being-argued-with*. Patron of every grief that *cannot be brought to the surface* — the long-grief, the ancestral-grief, the grief-for-the-disappeared.
