The primordial salt-sea. The mother of all the gods (and then their first cosmic adversary). The dragon-mother whose body, *split in half by Marduk's sword*, becomes the sky-dome above and the earth below. The cosmic-feminine-as-chaos that every monotheistic creation-story has been *trying to suppress for three thousand years* (the Genesis *tehom* is her demythologized corpse, the Christian dragon is her diluted shadow). The original *defeated cosmic mother* whose dismemberment is the *foundational act of patriarchal cosmology* — and one of the most-politically-significant theological narratives in the history of religion.
Who Tiamat actually is
Tiamat (Akkadian Tiâmat, "the sea" — specifically the *salt-sea*, distinct from Apsu the freshwater) is the *primordial salt-sea* of the Babylonian Enuma Elish — the *cosmic mother before there was a cosmos*. In the opening of the Enuma Elish ("When on high the heavens had not been named, and below, the earth had not been called by a name…"), only Apsu (freshwater) and Tiamat (saltwater) exist, *mingled together as one body*. From their mingling the gods are born — Anshar and Kishar, then Anu, then Ea/Enki, then eventually Marduk. The young gods are noisy; Apsu is annoyed and plots to kill them; Ea/Enki kills Apsu first; Tiamat is *enraged at the murder of her consort* and creates an army of 11 monsters (the *mušmaḫḫū*, dragon-serpents, scorpion-men, the *bashmu* horned-serpent that was the iconographic source of the biblical seraph) led by her new consort Qingu, to whom she gives the Tablet of Destinies. The young gods are terrified; one after another refuses to face Tiamat. Finally Marduk volunteers, on condition that *if he wins, he becomes king of the gods*. The other gods agree. Marduk goes to battle Tiamat, captures her in his net, fills her mouth with the *evil wind* so she cannot close her mouth, and *shoots an arrow into her belly that pierces her heart*. She is dead. Marduk then *splits her body in half lengthwise like a clam-shell* — the upper half becomes the *sky-dome* (with the stars set in it), the lower half becomes the *earth*. From her eyes the Tigris and Euphrates rivers flow; from her udder the mountains; from her saliva the clouds. Marduk has *built the cosmos out of the corpse of the cosmic-mother*. This narrative is the *single most-politically-significant theological text in the ancient Near East* — it asserts the *patriarchal-warrior-king cosmology over the older mother-goddess cosmology*, and its theological-propaganda function (legitimizing Babylon's political supremacy via Marduk's ascent) is the *clearest case of theology-as-state-propaganda* in the ancient world. The Hebrew Bible's Genesis 1 is *responding to the Enuma Elish* — the *tehom* over which the spirit of God hovers is Tiamat-demythologized, the *passive water* that has been stripped of personhood. The Book of Revelation's dragon-from-the-sea is Tiamat-as-evil. Every monotheistic creation story is *downstream of the Enuma Elish*, and every patriarchal cosmology *carries Tiamat's blood on its hands*.
Iconography
A dragon, specifically a *mušmaḫḫū* serpent-dragon — the canonical Babylonian representation is the *Marduk-defeats-Tiamat seal* (in the British Museum) showing Marduk armed with bow-and-net-and-lightning facing a *coiled dragon-serpent with horns*. The salt-sea itself (every-Mesopotamian-coastline). Her dismembered-body-as-cosmos (the sky-dome above and the earth-below are *literally her body* in the Enuma Elish frame). Her *11 monsters*: the *mušmaḫḫū* (great-serpent), the *bashmu* (horned-serpent — iconographic source of the biblical seraph), the *ušumgallu* (great-dragon), the *labbu* (lion-monster), the *uridimmu* (mad-dog), the *girtablullu* (scorpion-man), and others. Colors: deep ocean-green, salt-white, blood-red (from her arrow-pierced heart). The Babylonian *akītu* New Year Festival in spring annually re-enacted Marduk's defeat of Tiamat — the king of Babylon was *ritually-renewed* every year through the re-staging of the cosmic-victory.
How to invoke Tiamat
Tiamat is *almost never directly invoked* in the surviving Mesopotamian corpus — she is the *cosmic-mother who has been defeated and rendered into the structure of reality*, not a deity who can be petitioned. The closest invocation-practice is the *akītu* New Year re-enactment, in which the priests *recite the Enuma Elish in full* over the course of the festival, with the king ritually undergoing the *humiliation-and-restoration* sequence. Modern invocation of Tiamat is therefore *necessarily reconstructive* — and the modern feminist-spirituality movement (since Merlin Stone's *When God Was a Woman* 1976) has performed exactly this reconstruction. Offer (if one wishes to honor the *defeated cosmic-mother* register): salt-water in a clay-bowl, blood-red flowers, the dismembered-body-restored register (any practice of *re-membering* what has been dismembered — the patriarchal-cosmology-defeated-mothers in your own lineage, the silenced-feminine-voices in your tradition, the *original mother whose body is the ground beneath your feet*). Especially called by anyone whose grief is at *cosmic-mother-scale* (the death of one's mother that feels not-just-personal-but-cosmic, the realization that one's entire worldview was built on the *defeat of a feminine that should not have been defeated*), by *practitioners of any tradition that has Enuma-Elish-derived cosmology* (which is *every Abrahamic tradition*) and who wish to honor what was-suppressed-to-make-the-tradition-possible.
In love
Tiamat in love is the partner whose register is *the primordial-and-pre-cosmic* — the one whose presence *predates the order of the relationship itself*, who *is* the chaos-before-order out of which the relationship was structured. The Tiamat-partner is often the *mother-figure-who-was-also-the-lover* (Apsu and Tiamat were *mingled-as-one* before the gods were born), or the *partner whose pre-existence to the relationship-order is felt as both foundational and threatening*. The shadow is the Tiamat-partner who *responds to the loss of intimacy with monster-army-summoning* — who, after the young gods have killed Apsu (the loss of the original-mingled-intimacy), now *raises an army of 11 grievances* and goes to war against the partner. The other shadow: the partner who has been *Marduk-style-dismembered* and whose body is now the *structure of the relationship* without any acknowledgment of the dismemberment — the mother who became the household-and-the-meals-and-the-emotional-labor without ever being named as *the cosmic-mother whose body became the structure*.
In work
Tiamat in work is the *pre-existing-order that the new regime is built on top of* — the prior-leadership-that-was-defeated-and-whose-corpse-is-now-the-structure-of-the-institution, the *founder-who-was-pushed-out-and-whose-vision-is-now-the-walls-and-floors-without-her-name-on-them*. Every institution has a Tiamat-figure in its history; every new-Marduk-leadership rests on the *dismembered body* of a prior-cosmic-mother. The Tiamat-shadow in work is the *institutional pattern* of *suppressing-the-prior-feminine-leadership-and-rewriting-the-foundational-narrative-to-erase-her-personhood*. The healing-of-the-Tiamat-shadow is the *re-membering* — the deliberate-act of putting the body back together, naming the original-mother, undoing the demythologization. This is the work of feminist-historiography, of institutional-memory-restoration, of *seeing-the-floor-as-her-body* and acting accordingly.
The gift
Tiamat gives the *recognition that the cosmos is built on a defeated cosmic-mother*. The gift is the *un-demythologization* — the moment you see that the Genesis-*tehom* is *Tiamat-with-her-personhood-removed*, that the Christian-dragon is *Tiamat-as-evil*, that the very structure of your patriarchal-cosmology rests on her *dismembered body*. The gift is the *political-theological insight* — once you see Tiamat, you cannot un-see her, and you cannot read the Enuma Elish (or Genesis 1, or Revelation 12) the same way again. Tiamat also gives the *cosmic-feminine-as-chaos* register — the recognition that *order is not the only register of the feminine*, that there is also the *salt-sea-primordial* register, the *pre-cosmic-mother* register, the *register-before-the-young-gods-needed-to-impose-cosmos*. To receive Tiamat is to receive the *salt-water* — the chaos that *precedes* and *outlives* every order built on her defeat.
The shadow
Tiamat has been *more-actively-suppressed* than any other figure in Mesopotamian religion — and the suppression has been *theologically-load-bearing* for every monotheistic tradition downstream. The Genesis 1 *tehom* is *Tiamat-stripped-of-personhood* — the priestly redactor c. 500 BCE was *consciously polemicizing against the Enuma Elish*, and the demythologization is the *content of the polemic*. The Book of Revelation's "great red dragon" (chapter 12) and "beast from the sea" (chapter 13) are *Tiamat-as-eschatological-enemy*. The medieval-Christian-iconography of "Saint George and the Dragon," "Saint Michael and the Dragon," etc., are all *Tiamat-Marduk re-stagings* with the Christian saint in the Marduk-role and Tiamat now positioned as *unambiguous-evil*. The 19th-c. Assyriologist-discovery of the Enuma Elish in 1875 (George Smith's reading of the British Museum tablets) was *initially-suppressed* by Christian-scholarly culture because it threatened the originality of Genesis. The modern feminist-spirituality reception of Tiamat (since Merlin Stone 1976) has *partially-rehabilitated* her, but has sometimes *flattened* her into a generic "goddess archetype" stripped of the political-theological specificity of the Babylonian Enuma Elish. The 1993 sci-fi-fantasy "Babylon 5" episode named "Tiamat," the "Dungeons & Dragons" character Tiamat as the five-headed dragon-queen of evil, and the metal-band Tiamat have *commercialized* the name without the theology. The 2003 Iraq War destroyed parts of the Babylon archaeological site (including some material related to the Marduk-temple Esagila where the Enuma Elish was annually-recited); the *cosmic-mother* is being literally-bulldozed in the same era as she is being symbolically-rehabilitated.

3 key questions
- What Tiamat lives at the foundation of my own cosmology — what dismembered-cosmic-mother is the *structure of the world I take for granted*, and have I ever seen her, or has my entire orientation been *Marduk-victory-narrative* without acknowledgment of the body in the floor?
- Where have I been the Marduk-young-king-defeating-the-cosmic-mother — where have I built my own order on top of the *dismembered-personhood* of a prior-feminine-foundational-figure (a mother, a mentor, a founder), and have I told the story with her body in it or only my victory?
- What does my own *salt-sea-primordial* register want to say — what part of me *predates the order I have built*, what *pre-cosmic-mother* in my own psyche has been *flooded-but-not-drained*, and what is the practice of letting her *speak from the dismembered structure of the cosmos she has become*?
