Eihwaz

The yew — the tree of life and death, the bow of the warrior, the rune of initiation through transformation.

position 13 of 24 sound: EI hagal's aett
what Eihwaz means

Eihwaz means "yew." The yew is the longest-lived tree in northern Europe, a tree that grows from its own dead heartwood, planted in graveyards because it is the tree that touches both worlds. Eihwaz is the rune of *the great transformation* — death-and-rebirth, the initiation, the long descent and the long return. It is the World Tree axis, the connection between the ordinary world and the deep one. To pull Eihwaz is to be in an initiatory passage.

⬆️upright & reversed

upright

Initiation, transformation, the threshold between what you were and what you are becoming. A profound passage. The shamanic journey. The dark night of the soul that opens into a wider one.

reversed / merkstave

Eihwaz is roughly symmetrical — no clean reverse. Shadow: refusing the initiation, clinging to the old form, or the false initiation (a dramatic crisis that produced no real transformation).

💞in love & in work

in love

A relationship that has become an initiation — partner who reveals you to yourself in ways that hurt and heal. Reversed: refusal to grow with the partnership; a love asking for a death you are refusing.

in work

A career-defining transformation, a vocation revealing itself through hardship. Reversed: clinging to the role you already outgrew.

🎁the gift

what this rune teaches

Eihwaz teaches that *some growth requires the death of who you have been*. The yew lives by composting its own heartwood. You will lose forms of yourself you loved. What returns is more deeply yours.

🌑the shadow

where the rune turns against you

The shadow is identity-clinging, the refusal to die forward, the long mourning for a self you have already outlived.

🔮questions to sit with

before / during / after pulling Eihwaz

  1. What in me is asking to die so that the next version can live?
  2. What initiation am I currently inside, even if I have not yet named it?
  3. Where am I treating a death-and-rebirth process as merely a problem to solve?
