Almost every mystic tradition has a Tree of Life: the Norse Yggdrasil holding the nine worlds, the Kabbalistic *Etz Chaim* with its ten Sefirot, the Mayan *ceiba* connecting Xibalba to Heaven, the Celtic *crann bethadh* at the centre of every clan's sacred grove. The agreement is uncanny: the tree is *vertical*, with roots, trunk, and crown, and these correspond to underworld, middle world, and upper world. To be human is to live somewhere along the trunk. The branches reach for the sky we cannot quite touch; the roots dig into the dark we do not want to look at; and the trunk — the lived life — is the only place the two ever meet. The Tree of Life is the most honest map of the soul: top, bottom, *and* the part you are actually in.
