😈The Devil

The chains are loose. You can take them off. You haven't.

major arcana · 15 🜂 Earth ruled by Capricorn yes/no: no
upright meaning

The Devil shows a horned figure presiding over two chained humans. The chains around their necks are loose enough to slip off — they just haven't. This card is bondage of one's own making. Addiction, obsession, the relationship you keep returning to that doesn't serve you, the pattern you can name and still re-enact. The Devil is not external evil. The Devil is the part of you that finds the cage strangely comfortable. Naming it is half the freedom. The other half is walking out.

🔄reversed meaning

Reversed, the Devil is the chain coming off. The recognition. The breaking-out. The relationship ended, the substance put down, the pattern finally seen and refused. The hard part is starting; the harder part is staying out. Both are doable. Both are happening right now.

💞 in love

In love, the Devil is unhealthy attachment, codependence, or the dynamic that thrives on intensity instead of intimacy. If single, the pull toward the unavailable is a flag; ask what the unavailability is doing for you. If partnered, the cycle that exhausts both of you is one of you can name, and a no can break.

💼 in career

In career, the Devil is the toxic job, the boss who weaponizes need, or the addiction to status / money / external validation that is shaping decisions you wouldn't otherwise make. The card asks: what is the cage costing me, and is the comfort of the cage worth it?

spiritual gift

Spiritually, the Devil is shadow work — meeting the parts of yourself you've been pretending aren't yours. The lust, the greed, the rage, the fear. Not to indulge them; to integrate them. Repressed shadow runs the show from underground. Acknowledged shadow is at the table and easier to negotiate with.

🌀when you pull this card

When you pull the Devil, look at what you're still chained to that you've been pretending you aren't. The chain is loose. The exit is available. The choice is yours.
