Larch
Larix decidua
Despondency or despair · the 8 dark-night remedies · 26 of 38
For lack of confidence and anticipation of failure. Bach's remedy for the soul that has already decided it cannot.
What Larch actually treats
Larch is Bach's remedy for the person who does not try because they have already decided they will fail. Not despair (Sweet Chestnut) — confidence-collapse. The Larch person often watches less talented peers succeed at things they are actually more qualified for, because the peers tried and they did not. Bach saw the remedy as the dissolver of self-imposed disqualification — not the manufacture of confidence, but the removal of the conviction that prevents attempt.
The state it meets
Anticipated failure. "I cannot do it." Does not try, because the failure is already certain. Watches less-qualified others succeed. Capable but disqualifying self before the test.
The shift it brings
Willingness to attempt. The recognition that failure-while-trying is information; failure-by-default is just self-exile. Action becomes possible without the prerequisite of certainty.
In love
Larch in love is the person who does not pursue someone they care about because they have already decided they would be refused. The work is to let yourself be refused honestly, rather than refuse yourself preemptively.
In work
Larch in work is the operator who does not apply for the role they are actually qualified for. The remedy supports the move from "I cannot" to "I will try" — without requiring belief in success.
A 5-minute practice
Apply for, ask for, or attempt one thing this week that you have been disqualifying yourself from. The outcome does not matter for this practice. The practice IS the asking, separate from the result.

- What have I been disqualifying myself from before any external rejection — and what would happen if I let the world be the one to say no?
- When someone else, less qualified than me, succeeded at this — what does that tell me about the gap between competence and attempt?
- What is the smallest first attempt I could make today at the thing I have decided I cannot do?
