Despondency or despair · the 8 dark-night remedies · 31 of 38

For resentment and bitterness — the "life is unfair" stance that has hardened into chronic grievance. Bach's remedy for the soul stuck in unjust.

What Willow actually treats

Willow is Bach's remedy for chronic resentment. The person who feels life has dealt them an unfair hand and cannot let it go. Not the active anger of Holly — that has heat. Willow is colder: it is the sour, sulky, woe-is-me stance that complains without acting, that blames without forgiving, that fixates on the wrong done. Bach saw Willow types as having genuinely suffered, often genuinely been wronged — and as having confused that wrong with a verdict on their whole life. The remedy supports the move from blame to responsibility, which is the only doorway out of grievance.

The state it meets

Chronic resentment. "Life is unfair." Bitterness. Sulky withdrawal. Sees self as victim of circumstances. Cannot enjoy others' happiness. Complains without acting. The grievance has become identity.

The shift it brings

The recognition that grievance, however justified, is now its own prison. Movement returns. The capacity to take responsibility for the next step, even though the previous wrong was real. Joy becomes available.

In love

Willow in love is the partner keeping score across years. The work is to recognize that being right about the wrong does not produce love — only releasing it does. Justice without release is just slow erosion.

In work

Willow in work is the colleague who explains every setback by what others did to them — and who therefore never recovers the steering wheel. The remedy supports the move from "they did this to me" to "what do I do next."

A 5-minute practice

List your top three resentments. For each, write one action you could take this week that would move you forward — independent of whether the other person ever apologizes or repairs. The locus of agency returns to you.

3 key questions

  1. What grievance have I been carrying so long it has begun to feel like identity — and who would I be without it?
  2. What action could I take this week that would move me forward regardless of whether the original wrong is ever acknowledged?
  3. Is being right about what happened more important to me than being free of it?
