Vervain

Verbena officinalis

Over-care for welfare of others · the 5 grip-remedies · 35 of 38

For over-enthusiasm and fanaticism — the cause carried past the point of wisdom. Bach's remedy for the soul on fire with conviction.

What Vervain actually treats

Vervain is Bach's remedy for the over-zealous. The person who burns with conviction and cannot understand why others do not match the heat. The activist who alienates with intensity. The teacher who lectures. The reformer who cannot stop reforming. Bach saw Vervain types as genuinely good, often gifted, but tipped into excess — they cannot relax their cause, cannot let others come to it in their own time, cannot rest. The remedy preserves the conviction while softening the compulsion to convert.

The state it meets

Over-enthusiasm. Fanaticism. Tries to convert others to one's cause or opinion. Cannot relax. Burns with intensity that exhausts self and others. Lectures. Argues. Cannot let others come in their own time.

The shift it brings

Conviction without compulsion. The cause remains; the need to force-feed it dissolves. Others are allowed to disagree, or to come to the truth on their own timeline. The teacher's nervous system returns to ground.

In love

Vervain in love is the partner who keeps trying to convert the other to a way of eating, thinking, voting, healing. The work is to live the conviction without prescribing it — and to notice that example does more than argument ever did.

In work

Vervain in work is the founder who burns out the team with mission-intensity, the operator who lectures peers on optimal methodology. The remedy supports the move from "I must convince" to "I will live it; they will see."

A 5-minute practice

For one week, do not try to convince anyone of anything. Hold your convictions privately. Live them visibly. Notice what changes — both in your own nervous system and in how others receive you.

3 key questions

  1. What cause or conviction have I been trying to convert others to — and is the converting actually serving the cause, or just exhausting everyone?
  2. When have I been most successfully influential — and was it through pressure or through example?
  3. What would happen to the cause if I held it more quietly, more privately, but lived it more visibly?
