The Hexagram
Hexagram 15, *Qiān*, is uniquely auspicious in the I Ching — every single one of its lines is favourable, the only hexagram in the book of which this is true. Its image is the mountain *inside* the earth — the great strength that does not need to be visible to be real. The classical name is *Modesty* (Wilhelm-Baynes) or *Humility*. The hexagram counsels: *success; the superior man carries things through to the end*. Modesty in the I Ching is not self-effacement; it is the strength that does not require recognition to function.

A season of *Qiān* asks for the strength that does not need to be seen. Do the work without claiming credit. Hold the position without performing it. The mountain inside the earth is the most powerful image in the book; let it be your image.
The changing lines
Line 1 is *a superior man modest about his modesty may cross the great water — good fortune* — the deepest level: modesty so internalised it does not even know it is modesty. Every line of *Qiān* is favourable — there is no shadow line in this hexagram, the only one of its kind.
In love
The relationship is asking for quiet strength — the partner who can hold the position without needing the recognition. Do the act of love without making sure the love is seen.
In work
The work that is best done is the work nobody knows you did. The credit will come — or it will not — and the work itself is its own reward. Modesty is not a marketing strategy; it is a position of power.
The gift
*Strength that needs no audience.* The recognition that the most powerful position in any field is the one held by the person who does not require recognition to function.
The shadow
False modesty. The performance of humility — *humble-bragging*, the "look how modest I am" trap. *Qiān* is the strength that *does not even know it is being modest* — the moment you perform it, you are no longer in the hexagram.
