3 · Difficulty at the Beginning

The blade of grass shouldering through frozen ground — birth-pang, sprout-pain, the difficulty that means new life is arriving.

The Hexagram

Hexagram 3, *Zhūn*, is the third hexagram for a precise reason — after the pure originating force (1) and the pure receptive ground (2), the third movement is *the meeting of the two*, and the meeting is hard. Yang has begun to push into yin; the seed is in the soil but has not yet broken the surface. The classical image is *the blade of grass shouldering through frozen earth* — the difficulty that means *life*, not the difficulty that means *failure*. Wilhelm-Baynes calls it *Difficulty at the Beginning*. The counsel is precise: this is not the time to push to the destination; this is the time to *gather helpers*, find the people who can carry parts of the load, and accept that the early days of every real undertaking are mud.

When you pull this hexagram

The thing you are starting is real, and it is hard, and that does not mean you are doing it wrong. The hardness *is the proof* that you are doing it for the first time. Do not interpret the difficulty as a verdict. Do not push alone. Find help. The sprout breaks through.

The changing lines

A changing 1 is *hesitation, hindrance — it furthers one to remain persevering* — the small line on which the entire venture turns; do not abandon at the first obstacle. Line 5 is *difficulty in blessing; in small matters, fortune; in great matters, misfortune* — when the venture is large, do not try to do it alone.

In love

The new relationship is hard at the beginning — that does not mean it is wrong. The early days of every real partnership are the meeting of two whole histories; some grinding is normal. Reversed: ignoring real warnings under the banner of *every beginning is hard*. Difficulty that *teaches* is sprouting; difficulty that *only takes* is the wrong garden.

In work

The new project is in mud. Stop trying to be a one-person army. The hexagram's exact counsel is *it furthers one to appoint helpers*. Find the collaborator, hire the help, ask the favour. The early days are not the time to be heroic.

The gift

*The first sprout.* The recognition that hardness at the beginning is sometimes *the proof of life*, not the verdict against it. New things take time to break the surface.

The shadow

Romanticising difficulty. Treating every painful early stage as sacred, when sometimes the early pain is the right signal that the soil is wrong. Test: does the difficulty *teach* — do you see growth, even slowly? Or does it only *exhaust*?
