8 · Holding Together (Union)

Water gathering on earth — the village pool that everyone shares; the union that becomes the centre of belonging.

The Hexagram

Hexagram 8, *Bǐ*, is the image of water gathering on earth — a pool, a lake, the village well around which the community forms. The classical name is *Holding Together (Union)*. The hexagram's counsel is *good fortune; inquire of the oracle once again whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance; then there is no blame*. The lesson: union is good *when the centre of the union is sound*. If you are joining the gathering, ask first whether the centre — the leader, the project, the relationship, the cause — is one you can give your sublimity, constancy, and perseverance to. If not, do not join. *Late-comers find misfortune* — those who hesitate too long miss the gathering.

When you pull this hexagram

A union is forming around you — a team, a partnership, a community. The hexagram says *yes, but ask first*. Is the centre sound? Can you give it your full presence? If yes, do not be the late-comer. If no, do not be the late-leaver.

The changing lines

Line 5 is *manifestation of holding together; the king uses beaters on three sides only — game in front of him is allowed to escape* — the counsel that the leader of a union must allow voluntary belonging, never coerce it. Line 6 is *holding together without a head — misfortune* — union without leadership disperses.

In love

The relationship is asking for full commitment. Ask first: is the centre sound? Then commit fully. Half-presence in union is worse than absence.

In work

Join the team or do not. Half-membership is the worst of both worlds. If the project, the company, the cause is sound — give it everything. If not, leave cleanly.

The gift

*Belonging to a sound centre.* The recognition that union, when given to a centre worth uniting around, is one of the great human goods.

The shadow

Half-presence. The team-member who is always almost-leaving and never-fully-here. The partner who is in the marriage and not in the marriage. Union requires a full yes.
