Agrimony

Agrimonia eupatoria

Over-sensitivity to influences · the 4 wall-remedies · 22 of 38

For hiding distress behind cheerfulness — the jovial mask over private pain. Bach's remedy for the smile that costs.

What Agrimony actually treats

Agrimony is Bach's remedy for the cheerful mask. The person who is always "fine." The life of the party. The peacemaker who jokes their way past anything difficult. Bach saw the Agrimony state as inner torment hidden behind outward jollity — the suffering goes unmet because no one knows it is there. The remedy is not the loss of humor or warmth; it is the restoration of access to one's own true feelings, even when those feelings are unpleasant. The mask softens; the face beneath becomes visible.

The state it meets

Hiding distress behind cheerfulness. Always "fine." Jokes away pain. Conflict-averse to the point of self-betrayal. Substance use to soften feelings rather than face them. Inner torment invisible to others.

The shift it brings

Permission to be unwell publicly. The capacity to name difficulty without performing comfort. Humor remains, but ceases to be defense. Real intimacy becomes possible because the real self shows up.

In love

Agrimony in love is the partner who never lets their distress be seen — and who therefore is never truly met. The work is to let the partner see you on a bad day without rushing to reassure them you are fine.

In work

Agrimony in work is the team-member everyone likes who is privately burning out and saying nothing. The remedy supports the move to ask for help, name capacity-limits, and let leadership see the real state.

A 5-minute practice

Once today, when someone asks "how are you?", answer truthfully. Not a long story — one accurate sentence. ("Honestly, I am tired today.") Notice the discomfort. The discomfort is the mask, and the truth is the dissolving of it.

3 key questions

  1. What difficult truth about my state today have I been performing past — and what would saying it out loud, once, actually cost?
  2. Who in my life knows the version of me that is not "fine" — and if no one does, what is that costing me?
  3. When I was last honestly unwell with someone, how did they respond — and is the fear of bad response actually rooted in evidence or in old wound?
