Centaury
Centaurium umbellatum
Over-sensitivity to influences · the 4 wall-remedies · 23 of 38
For the inability to say no — the doormat-pleaser whose service has eaten their life. Bach's remedy for the soul without boundaries.
What Centaury actually treats
Centaury is Bach's remedy for the over-server. The person who cannot say no. The one who agrees to every request, takes on every favor, says yes when their body is saying no. Bach saw the Centaury type as kind, gentle, often spiritually devoted — but bypassing their own needs so consistently that the self begins to disappear. The remedy is not the development of selfishness; it is the recovery of the self that has the right to choose what it serves.
The state it meets
Cannot say no. Over-commits. Says yes when meaning no. Resentment builds underneath the agreeable surface. Boundaries unclear or absent. Service has become servitude.
The shift it brings
The capacity to say no without guilt. Service that is chosen rather than reflexive. Resentment dissolves because the self is no longer being violated by its own agreements. Energy returns.
In love
Centaury in love is the partner who has been giving past depletion for years — and who has begun to disappear inside the giving. The work is to disappoint the partner once, gently, on something small, and notice the relationship survives.
In work
Centaury in work is the colleague who picks up every dropped ball. The remedy supports the move from "indispensable doormat" to "trusted teammate" — by letting some balls drop and trusting others to pick them up.
A 5-minute practice
For one week, before saying yes to any request, ask: "What does my body want to do?" Then notice the gap between body-yes and mouth-yes. Honor the body once. The world does not end.

3 key questions
- What recent yes did I give that my body had already said no to — and what would change if I rescinded it?
- What do I imagine would happen if I disappointed the people I keep saying yes to — and is the imagined cost actually accurate to the real cost?
- Whose needs am I currently serving at the expense of mine, and is the service mutual or one-way?
