17 · Following

Thunder inside the lake — the season the strong agrees to follow the season; adapting to what is rising.

隨 Suí Lake above Thunder King Wen #17

The Hexagram

Hexagram 17, *Suí*, is the image of thunder *inside* the lake — the dynamic force voluntarily contained by the receptive vessel. The classical name is *Following*. The hexagram counsels: *supreme success; perseverance furthers; no blame*. The lesson: following in the I Ching sense is *not* subordination — it is the strong leader who recognises the season requires adapting rather than imposing his will. The wise leader follows the season; the foolish leader fights it. Following the right thing — the times, the moment, the deeper current — is itself a form of mastery.

When you pull this hexagram

You are being asked to *follow* — not to lead. Recognise what is rising and align with it. The temptation is to push your own agenda; the wisdom is to read the season and adapt.

The changing lines

Line 4 is *following creates success; perseverance brings misfortune; to go one's way with sincerity brings clarity* — the warning that following can become sycophancy; sincerity is the discriminator. Line 6 is *he meets with firm allegiance and is still further bound* — full surrender to the right cause yields the deepest connection.

In love

The relationship is asking you to follow — to receive your partner's lead in something, to align with their season. Reversed: following out of fear rather than discernment.

In work

The market, the team, the moment is rising in a direction. Read it and align. Stop pushing your previous agenda. The wise leader follows the season.

The gift

*Discerned following.* The recognition that following the right thing is a form of mastery, not weakness.

The shadow

Following the wrong thing. Sycophancy, conformity, abdication. *Suí* requires sincerity in the discernment of *what* to follow.
