Thunder above thunder — the doubled shock; awakening that arrives as terror and becomes laughter.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 51, *Zhèn*, is the image of thunder above thunder — the doubled shock. The classical name is *The Arousing*. The hexagram counsels: *success; shock comes; oh oh!; laughing words; ha ha!; the shock terrifies for a hundred miles, and he does not let fall the sacrificial spoon and chalice*. The lesson is precise and beautiful: the shock arrives. The wise person *registers it* — *oh oh!* — but does not drop the sacred work — *he does not let fall the spoon and chalice* — and the shock passes into laughter — *ha ha!*. The terror is real; the discipline is the continuity of the sacred work through the terror.
