䷳52 · Keeping Still (Mountain)
Mountain above mountain — the doubled stillness; the practice of stopping that becomes the most active state.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 52, *Gèn*, is the image of mountain above mountain — the doubled stillness. The classical name is *Keeping Still*. The hexagram counsels: *keeping his back still so that he no longer feels his body; he goes into his courtyard and does not see his people; no blame*. The lesson is profound: there is a kind of stillness so deep that the practitioner forgets the body — and from that depth, action arises that could not arise from any other state. *Gèn* is the meditation hexagram, the stillness that is more active than activity.
When you pull this hexagram
A season of stillness is on you — and the hexagram is asking for the deep kind, the kind that goes past the body. Stop. Sit. Let the mountain inside you stand. The action that arises from this stillness is wiser than any action you could plan.
The changing lines
Line 5 is *keeping his jaws still; the words have order; remorse disappears* — even the speech is stilled; the discipline of right speech arises from the stillness of the jaws. Line 6 is *noble-hearted keeping still; good fortune* — the deepest level: stillness in the heart itself.
In love
Stop. Stop trying to fix. Stop explaining. Let the mountain stand. The relationship that has been over-managed needs the doubled stillness.
In work
Stop iterating. Stop optimising. Stop pushing. Sit. The right move arises from the stillness, not from the planning.
The gift
*The active stillness.* The recognition that the deepest practice is the stopping that lets clarity arise.
The shadow
Stillness as avoidance. Sitting forever to avoid the action that the stillness was meant to clarify. *Gèn* is the *first* movement; the action follows.
3 questions to sit with
- Where in my life right now am I being asked to stop — to enter the doubled stillness — that I have been refusing because stopping feels like failure?
- What action am I planning that the hexagram is asking me to *not yet* take — to let stillness clarify it first?
- Where am I using stillness as avoidance rather than as clarification?
