The Hexagram
Hexagram 64 — the *last* hexagram of the book and the inverse of #63 — is the image of fire above water, every line in the *wrong* position, the cooking not yet complete. The classical name is *Before Completion*. The hexagram counsels: *success; but if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing, gets his tail in the water, there is nothing that would further*. The lesson is precise and beautiful: the I Ching does *not* end with completion. It ends *before completion*. The wisdom is that life itself is *Wèi Jì* — perpetually almost-arrived. The little fox who is almost across must not get his tail wet at the last moment; the discipline is *to the last step*.
