Ashlesha (आश्लेषा, 'the embrace' / 'the entwiner') is the ninth nakshatra, the closing 13°20' of sidereal Cancer, ruled by Mercury and presided over by the Nagas — the serpent-beings of Vedic and Hindu cosmology, keepers of underground wisdom, guardians of the treasures of the earth. The symbol is the *coiled serpent* — the kundalini-energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine until awakened, the snake whose venom is poison or medicine depending on the wielder. Ashlesha is the *most intense* of the personal-quarter nakshatras — the mansion where the individual is forced to meet the depth-energies before crossing into the social half of the wheel.
