The Nakshatra
Bharani (भरणी, 'the bearer') is the second nakshatra, sidereal Aries 13°20'–26°40', ruled by Venus and presided over by Yama — the first mortal in the Rig Veda (10.14), who walked the path of death first and so became dharma-raja, the king who shows the souls the road. The symbol is the yoni — the female generative organ, the bearing-vessel — and the gana is *manushya* (human), distinct from the deva first nakshatra. Bharani is the nakshatra of *carrying* — the womb that holds the becoming child, the discipline that holds the practice through years before the fruit ripens, the friend who holds the secret. Classical jyotish (Phaladeepika 6.2, Saravali 10) names Bharani natives steady, sensual, capable of immense endurance, and unusually able to be present with the dying — Yama-people, threshold-people. The Venus rulership names the *aesthetic* of the carry: Bharani holds beauty in the carrying, makes the long discipline gorgeous rather than grim. The shadow is when the carry becomes possession — the bearing-vessel that refuses to release at the right time.
