The 10 Pranayamas — meanings, how to practise & what they do
Hand-written guides to the most-practised breath techniques across yogic, buddhist, and modern integrative traditions. From Nadi Shodhana (the daily balancing breath) to the Wim Hof Method (the cold-and-breath protocol). Each page has the actual lineage, the actual rhythm, the gift, the shadow, and the contraindications.
How to use this page
Looking for the right breath for your moment? Click any of the 10 below. Every page has the actual *meaning* (tradition + translation), what the breath *does* in the body and nervous system (with the contraindications named explicitly), *how to practise* it (rhythm, ratio, duration), what it means in love and in work, the *gift* it teaches, the *shadow* (forcing, performance, drowning — named where relevant), and pair-with cards for chakra, mudra, sound (Phase 1A audio), and zodiac.
The three families. The 10 breaths cluster naturally. Foundation (Nadi Shodhana, Ujjayi, Diaphragmatic, Box) is the daily-breath family — safe for everyone, recommended as default practice. Cooling (Bhramari, Sitali, 4-7-8) is the parasympathetic family — for anxiety, heat, insomnia, the moment after intensity. Heating (Kapalabhati, Bhastrika, Wim Hof) is the sympathetic family — for activation, morning awakening, immune resilience, and the edges of human performance; these require respect for the contraindications.
Breath is the third leg of the body-practice tripod. Sound (mantras) and gesture (mudras) shape the inside; breath is what moves through both. A pranayama practice paired with the right mudra and the right mantra has been the spine of yogic transmission for centuries. See the 16 mudras → · See the 12 mantras →
