The Hexagram
Hexagram 34, *Dà Zhuàng*, is the image of thunder bursting above heaven — vast power in motion. The classical name is *The Power of the Great*. The hexagram counsels: *perseverance furthers*. The lesson is brief and severe: when great power is in your hands, the only question that matters is *whether you are righteous enough to wield it*. Power without righteousness is the most destructive force in the I Ching; power with righteousness is the most transformative.
When you pull this hexagram
You have come into great power — political, financial, creative, relational. The hexagram's only counsel: *perseverance furthers*. Stay disciplined. The power is asking whether you are big enough to hold it.
The changing lines
Line 3 is *the inferior man uses power; the superior man does not act thus; perseverance brings danger* — the warning that power untempered by discipline becomes self-destruction. Line 6 is *a goat butts against a hedge; he cannot retreat, he cannot advance — recognising the difficulty brings good fortune* — power that has run into its own limits; the recognition itself is the freedom.

Power dynamics in the relationship are real. Use yours righteously. The strong partner who uses strength to dominate corrupts the relationship. The strong partner who uses strength to protect, lift, and free deepens it.
In work
You have come into authority. Use it for the work, not for the self. Power deployed for the mission expands the mission; power deployed for the ego shrinks it.

The goat butting the hedge — power applied where it cannot succeed, ego refusing to recognise its limits. Power without discipline destroys what it touches.
