䷧40 · Deliverance
Thunder over water — the storm breaking and clearing; the season the long obstruction finally releases.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 40, *Xiè*, is the image of thunder over water — the storm that breaks and then clears, releasing what has been held. The classical name is *Deliverance*. The hexagram counsels: *the south-west furthers; if there is nothing more to seek, return brings good fortune; if there is still something to seek, hastening brings good fortune*. The lesson: the obstruction has released. The wise behaviour now is *not to dwell* in the suffering that has just ended — return to ordinary life, or move quickly to claim what was being held back.
When you pull this hexagram
The release has come. The blockage that has been holding for a long time is finally breaking. The hexagram counsels: do not stay in the old grief; move into the new freedom. Return to ordinary life, or hasten to claim what was held.
The changing lines
Line 6 is *the prince shoots at a hawk on a high wall; he kills it; everything serves to further* — the precise final correction that closes the chapter cleanly. Sometimes deliverance requires one last decisive act.
In love
The long-held tension is releasing. Do not stay in the old grief. Move into the new ground. Reconciliation, fresh start, or clean release — the hexagram is permission for the move.
In work
The obstacle has cleared. Move quickly. Claim the territory that was being denied. Do not dwell in the old battle.
The gift
*Right exit from suffering.* The recognition that when deliverance comes, the wise behaviour is to leave the suffering cleanly rather than dwell in its aftermath.
The shadow
Dwelling in the released grief. Continuing to feel the old suffering after the release has come — turning what was real grief into identity.
