䷣36 · Darkening of the Light
Sun sunk beneath the earth — the season of hidden light; the wise behaviour in dark times.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 36, *Míng Yí*, is the image of the sun sunk beneath the earth — the season of *hidden light*. The classical name is *Darkening of the Light*. The hexagram counsels: *in adversity, it furthers one to be persevering*. The lesson: there are seasons in which the wise course is to *hide the light* — to not display competence in environments that punish it, to keep counsel, to wait for the dawn. The light is not extinguished; it is hidden. The hexagram's most-cited line is *one veils his light, but yet still shines* — concealment as protection of the source.
When you pull this hexagram
You are in a darkening season — environmentally, politically, relationally. The wise behaviour is to *hide the light*: not to display all you know, not to engage every provocation, not to make yourself a target. Veil the light. The dawn will come.
The changing lines
Line 5 is *darkening of the light, as with Prince Chi; perseverance furthers* — the classical reference to Prince Chi, who survived a tyrannical dynasty by concealing his wisdom while preserving it for the next generation. Concealment as transmission.
In love
Some truths are not safe to speak in this season. Hold them. The right moment will come. *Míng Yí* is not lying; it is preservation.
In work
You are in a hostile environment — bad boss, toxic team, politically dangerous moment. Hide the light. Preserve the work. The dawn will come.
The gift
*Concealed strength.* The recognition that some seasons require hiding the light to preserve it for the dawn that is coming.
The shadow
Hiding the light forever. Concealment as a permanent state. *Míng Yí* is *for the dark season*; carrying it into the light becomes its own corruption.
